2016-2017 Program Participant Application
What does the GNS Research Program Offer?
An enjoyable learning experience: The program is designed to give students a sense of
community both within the classroom and within the program. We work to broaden the
participants’ understanding of the process of science in an individualistic manner. The
atmosphere is supportive with emphasis on learning, not competition.
An opportunity to explore: Students will have the freedom to explore areas of interest by
carrying out projects in a variety of areas including biology, chemistry, math, public health, and
psychology. They will develop skills in finding resources, designing and conducting
experiments, and data analysis.
Interactions with professionals: Students will have the opportunity to present their data at a
number of local science competitions where they will get a chance to speak with professional
scientists about their results. In addition, students in the research program have the chance to
conduct research in university and hospital settings that include Stony Brook University,
Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, LIJ, and many others.
National Competitions: Research students may participate in several national competitions
including, but not limited to, the Intel Science Talent Search (ISTS), Siemens Science and
Technology Competition, and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS).
What type of students are we looking for?
Grades are but a minor determining factor for admission. What we look for are individuals with
great self-motivation, determination and passion to do independent hands-on experimental
research in a topic area of their own choosing. Bottom line, we want students who work hard
and will commit themselves to learning the process of science. If you have any interest in such
an endeavor, we strongly suggest that you apply.
